Sinopsis /  Synopsis:

DEPARTURES is an in-theater performance which deals with the theme of the Cuban emigration from 1959 to the present. It looks at each of the best-known emigration crisis (1980 or 1994), and beyond, and explores this unceasing phenomenon that continues to this day. Migration (forced or voluntary) have fragmented families, couples, friendships, communities, and because its all-encompassing nature, has become a unifying element, a part of our identity. From the personal experience of the actress Mariela Brito, her friends and family, interconnected with the personal histories of the audience, the real and all too real co-protagonist of our drama, DEPARTURES seeks communion from a balanced approach to the events that have drastically changed the lives of so many, for good and bad. Taking the Cuban experience as a departure, our piece calls attention to a problem with global ramifications, at a moment of acute migration crisis and desperate flight of whole human groups from their realities.

At the entrance of the headquarters of El Ciervo a map of the world shows the diverse places of the planet where Cubans have arrived. At the end of the performance the actress invites the audience to visit the space where the piece takes place and the audience can see at close-range the photographs and even read some of the letters that have not been read aloud by her. Before they exit, some members of the audience locate on the map key-points known to them. In this way, the piece is completed and in doing so it manages to tune each person with an area of our daily lives that does not usually appear in big headlines or prominent spaces, and that is also absent from the daily debate of our citizenship. While the official headlines of our newspapers refer to the phenomenon as “one of the great problems of the contemporary world”, DEPARTURES remind us that it is also our everyday reality. To speak of it is imperative if we truly believe in the possibility of tomorrow.

In that space lit up with a cold light, without any theatrical artifice, Mariela goes on telling her own story, and giving an answer to the question of why so many left. It is she, with the others, who has the voice to narrate a history that is part of the supranational story, and without which the Island would be incomplete. Apparently, she is also waiting to leave, it is unclear whether to return to the Island or to depart from it. A departure, nevertheless. In her story, plural and inclusive, she traces a Via Dolorosa that is also a deep scar on the life of an island whose fate, or at least part of it, has been a sort of bleeding of the flesh and the spirit. The dramaturgy is structured based on micro-histories in a collective context. Personal biographies are caught up in social circumstances, in the jumbled amalgam of the now. Victims of events beyond their power, caught in the middle of political strife, they left, and keep on leaving.

With an intriguing mise en scène, actress Mariela Brito narrates in first person the vicissitudes of each of our great emigration episodes, surrounded herself by photographs of illustrious and unknown Cubans who literally left the Island to escape hunger, censorship, persecution and terror. Writer Guillermo Cabrera Infante, singer Celia Cruz, artist Ana Mendieta, novelist Reinaldo Arenas and filmmaker Juan Carlos Cremata are some of the exiles who emerge in the monochromatic and lugubrious light which recreates a context that was not less oppressive. Truthful testimony, coupled with the personal histories of those who lived the horrors of a traitor friend, a snitch neighbor, a colleague quick to misinterpret any syllable and then vomit an elaborate fallacy before a superior in exchange for a pat on the shoulder, and the family shattered by fear and flight, have the effect of a cataclysm on a befuddled memory.

The actress Mariela Brito will lead us through a part of the national memory that is never discussed but that is among us, the Cubans, with an almost physical presence. Mariela, in a colloquial tone, tells us the reasons for the departure of those who left. These are stories very much like those we have in our own family, among friends and acquaintances. But beyond the stories told, as empty rafts float the others, those who did not live to tell and who are, in a way, the real protagonists of DEPARTURES. That absence can be filled by the members of the audience with their own memories. The staging, deliberately slow, allows us to digest, metabolize facts, the moments that mark one of the great dramas of our country’s history: the family and social fracture. As if it were not enough, a screen shows the successive departures of the last 58 years. Scars that we carry inside and that –as the performance remind us– will never heal.

These DEPARTURES –as advertised at airports– are those experienced by so many Cubans for more than 50 years. But the departures in Cuba are not always from an airport, on an airplane, nor are they always legal or voluntary. The traveler does not always reach the destination. Cubans, as stated in one of the letters read on the scene, more than just leave, escape. I had to see DEPARTURES to know that there was a Raúl Chibás, brother of Eduardo Chibás, and Commander of the Revolution, who disagreed with the direction taken by the country and had to flee with his family, "in a 17-foot boat", to avoid prison. I had to see DEPARTURES to know that there was something called "Traitors Camps", where those who asked to leave the country had to wait, laboring in agriculture farms, in a semi-military regime. And like me, many of those born in the 70's, 80's, 90's, or the present century, listened to the stories of the “departed”, astonished and speechless. There is no melodrama, no tears, no catharsis in DEPARTURES. One of the best things about this play is the (acting?) of Mariela Brito. This woman, whom I have seen exhibiting some impressive histrionics in the plays An elephant occupies a lot of space, Visions of Cubanosophy, Varieties of Galiano and Cubalandia, here seems engaged in not-acting. She is pure control, and more preoccupied with explaining what she has lived, all those departures, those of her friends, her relatives and even her own. Much of what she narrates is part of our own history. Is not just that Mariela Brito is playing Mariela Brito. It is Mariela Brito telling you what happened, without theatricality, without pretention.
